Renaissance, Then and Now

The Renaissance was a period between the 14th and 16th centuries filled with intricate fashion, Renaissance intellectuals, beautiful artwork, and amazing floral arrangements. Even though the Renaissance ended centuries ago, these things all still exist today; this is how they have modernized overtime.

Floral Design

Some aspects of Grecian and Roman design persisted during the Renaissance. Decorations were frequently arranged with fruit and vegetation like ferns, ivy, laurel, olives, etc. Dianthus, lilies, violets, roses, snapdragons, columbines, and primroses, to name a few, comprised many of the flowers frequently used. Arrangements served a dual purpose for religious and metaphorical implications as well. They started out modest but began to flourish and become more ornate. Florists were viewed as creatives. Designs had an abundance of vivid colors and were tall and symmetrical. Venetian glass, platforms, metal vases, and marble urns served to hold the flowers. This era is when floral arrangements began to appear on walls, ceilings, and hanging from balconies.

A dozen roses won't suffice in 2023 either. Whether it's the finishing touch in a living room or a lavish celebration, fresh flowers are the perfect completion to any well-designed area. It's not necessary to limit arrangements to tabletops. Consider how you might include florals on your walls or in a more dynamic, artistic way by taking inspiration from modern VIPs. The giant bouquets fill living rooms and entryways, and are a gift to parade great love and appreciation. Today, we frequently see massive floral arrangements on the Instagram pages of famed individuals admiring their received flowers, most commonly including the Kardashians.

Fashion

Fashion design is about amplifying human beauty and extravagance with creative power. The Renaissance was a time of great change and innovation in many areas, including fashion. The elite began to use fashion as a major means of displaying their wealth and social standing. Apparel was characterized by rich fabrics like silk and velvet which were often imported from the Far East. The more complex and heavily embellished the garment was, the higher the prestige it represented. Men's clothing was cut to emphasize shape, while corsets and hoops were used in women's garments to define a silhouette. The rich made expensively crafted and elaborately decorated accessories like fans, gloves, and hats fashionable. During this time, elite clothing enhanced the social and economic dominance of the ruling classes by reflecting their luxury and extravagance.

Today, many A-listers serve as ambassadors for luxury fashion houses by wearing designer clothing on the red carpet and in their everyday lives. Celebrities often have access to exclusive collections and custom-tailored garments, and their fashion choices can influence trends and inspire millions of fans. Designer brands also often partner with high status individuals to create limited edition collections. High end fashion can still often be about displaying wealth and social status, but celebrity fashion is also about creating a personal brand and image. The elite use fashion to communicate their personalities, showcase their individuality, and intrigue their audience, making their fashion choices a powerful tool for self-expression and self-promotion.

The Renaissance Man ~ & Woman

Being knowledgeable and proficient in a range of disciplines is only one aspect of the Renaissance man philosophy. It embodies a balanced perspective on life that fully integrates intellectual, artistic, and physical endeavors. Renaissance men were not simply geniuses on paper, but also valued creativity, curiosity, and critical thinking. They sought to fully understand humanity, as they believed it was a web of knowledge. These individuals were not content with just accepting what they were taught, but rather they questioned the status quo and sought to expand the boundaries of human knowledge and understanding. Through their innovations and discoveries, Renaissance men paved the way for scientific and artistic progress that continues to shape our world today. Some of the most well-known Renaissance men include Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Galileo Galilei, and others.

Today, the idea of a Renaissance woman is a progression of the Renaissance man ideal, even if we no longer commonly refer to anyone as a Renaissance Man. Women's capacity to become Renaissance leaders was constrained historically since they were denied access to many of the opportunities and academic disciplines that were open to males. However, in modern times, the concept of a Renaissance woman has emerged as women have gained more access to education, careers, and other artistic and creative opportunities. Similarly today, a Renaissance woman is someone who has a well-rounded approach to life, balancing intellectual, artistic, and physical pursuits. The idea also emphasizes the importance of women's contributions to society and the need for their voices and perspectives to be heard in various fields. There are many women in modern society that have heavily contributed to the arts such as music and acting, intelligence, and other forms of societal advancement. Although many individuals nowadays could be considered Renaissance women or men, these titles are frequently dependent on personal influence.

Visual Arts

The Renaissance period was marked by a renewed interest in classical antiquity and humanism. Renaissance painters used contrasts with light and dark and linear perspective to provide depth and dimension to their works of art to portray the world as authentically as possible. Famous painters like Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo flourished throughout this time and created masterpieces in several mediums, including paintings and sculptures. Religious themes commonly predominated in Renaissance art, but there were simpler elements like landscapes and portraits as well. This period’s artwork is recognized for its technical mastery, aesthetic appeal, and emotional expressiveness. They still inspire and fascinate audiences today.

Visual arts continue to be diverse and varied as artists experiment with new forms, techniques, and mediums to convey their ideas and visions. Modern art frequently challenges traditional boundaries between art forms by utilizing technology and digital media. Some of the key movements and genres in contemporary art include conceptual art, performance art, installation art, and street art, among others. Notable artists today like Banksy, Jeff Koons, and others are still expanding the parameters of what is conceivable in the world of visual art with their inspiring creations.

These are all forms of art and creativity. They existed centuries ago and are still around today. They now hardly look just as they did during the Renaissance, but they are nonetheless extravagant, elite, and influential. Fashion, floral design, visual arts, and influential people have remained an important and prominent aspect of culture and society. These have all existed for thousands of years, the way that they appear simply evolves over time.
